Inspiring Leaders - A Conversation with Femi Oluwafemi

I had an engaging conversation with Femi Oluwafemi on what leadership really looks like.

🌍 Leadership Starts Before the Title

Femi’s leadership journey began as the oldest of five, responsible for keeping the household steady. He learned early that a leader is responsible for those in their care.

“You are a leader when you see something that needs to be done, and you step up to solve the problem.”

💛 Servant Leadership at the Core

He learned from his father and mentors that leadership is sacrificial: put your team’s comfort and growth before your own, shine the spotlight on others, and extend grace when people fail. 

“Your comfort comes last, think first about others.”

🤝 Empathy + Accountability = Real Leadership

Empathy can be learned but it must be paired with clear standards. Femi sets non‑negotiable cultural rules (no hoarding knowledge, no backstabbing) and enforces them with fairness and one‑on‑one coaching. Femi believes that leaders are responsible for setting standards and protecting the team culture.
“If you don’t share knowledge, I’m coming after you… there’s no backstabbing on this team.”

🧠 Psychological Safety Fuels Innovation

His teams innovate because they feel safe to fail, speak up, and challenge ideas. That environment produced patents and product breakthroughs.

“No idea is stupid… ideas can come from anywhere.”

He studies his team’s strengths deeply so he can deploy the right people at the right time.
“I know who will work with me to get it done, and who won’t.”
