Inspiring Leaders - A Conversation with Adeolu Akinyemi

I had the privilege of sitting with Deolu, a leader whose journey is a masterclass in visionary leadership, humility, and people-centered impact. Our conversation left me reflecting deeply on what it truly means to lead with purpose.

🔥 His Definition of Leadership?

Leadership begins with a vision bigger than yourself, a picture of the future you cannot achieve alone.
As he put it, “Leadership is realizing you need others to win, and ensuring your vision becomes a collective vision.”

From primary school, he learned that empowering others to win creates room for your own win. That early lesson shaped a lifelong belief: nothing is impossible when people move together.

📚 Influences That Shaped Him

Deolu draws inspiration from:

  • Jesus — his cornerstone model of leadership

  • Mandela & Martin Luther King Jr. — leaders who rallied people toward a shared possibility

  • Stories of courage from films like Braveheart and Coach Carter

These influences reinforced his conviction that leadership is about vision, fairness, and enabling others to succeed.

💡 His Core Leadership Values

Deolu leads with a simple but powerful framework:

  • Lead by example — never ask others to do what you wouldn’t do

  • Be the custodian of the vision — energize, empower, and enable

  • Create collective wins — success must make sense to everyone involved

One of my favorite stories he shared was how, as a university student, he rallied an entire class of engineering students to produce a drama production, with no script, no plan, just a compelling vision. Within days, people with diverse talents emerged, united by his energy and belief.

💥 On Failure & Staying Grounded

He was refreshingly honest:
Yes, he has failed many times.
But he sees failure as feedback and not finality.
“Either we succeed or we learn.”

To stay grounded, he intentionally surrounds himself with people who hold him accountable, a personal “mastermind” group that keeps him aligned with his values.

🏛️ Building Culture & Teams

Culture, he says, is shaped through:

  • Communication

  • Modeling the values

  • Rewarding what’s right

  • Applying consequences when needed

He chooses to believe the best in people, giving them a chance to rise, even when others have written them off. And more often than not, they rise.

🌪️ Leading Through Pressure

One of the most powerful moments was his story of a warehouse fire that destroyed millions in inventory.
Instead of panic, he anchored himself in faith and perspective:
“Nothing bad happens. Everything works together for good.”

His calm set the tone and became the team’s calm; and his belief became their strength.

🌱 Legacy

Ultimately, Deolu hopes his legacy reflects the leadership model of Jesus, a life of service, empowerment, and purpose-driven impact.

Thank you, Deolu, for sharing your wisdom, your stories, and your heart.
Your journey is a gift to emerging leaders everywhere.
