Inspiring Leaders: A Conversation with Rishi Pande
I recently sat down with someone who has shaped my leadership journey in profound ways, Rishi Pande. Nearly 20 years ago, he was one of the first leaders I worked with after grad school, and the impact of his leadership still guides how I show up today.
Our conversation on the Inspiring Leaders series was a masterclass in what authentic, people-centered leadership looks like. Here are insights from our discussion:
🚀 Leadership is about elevating people beyond what they believe is possible
Rishi sees leadership as “getting individuals and teams to be something greater than just themselves.”
It’s about unlocking collective potential through purpose, clarity, and shared impact.
🌱 Great leaders grow by learning from others
From parents to professors to colleagues, and even global figures like President Obama, Rishi intentionally studies people.
He pulls the best from each one and shapes his own leadership style through observation, and reflection.
🧩 High-performing teams thrive on clarity, diversity, and shared accountability
Rishi highlighted four essentials for strong team culture:
Clear goals
Complementary skills
Diversity of thought
Understanding the value each person brings
Purpose is the engine that drives excellence.
🛡️ Psychological safety fuels innovation
Rishi leads with empathy, curiosity, and grace.
His philosophy:
👉 “It’s okay to disagree, but not okay to be disagreeable.”
When people feel safe to take risks, they grow. When they grow, the team wins.
🎯 Stretch people — because they’re capable of more than they think
Rishi is known for giving people opportunities they don’t feel “qualified” for yet.
He believes motivation + support can unlock extraordinary growth.
I’m living proof of that, and so are many others who’ve worked with him.
🤝 Relationships and trust make the hard conversations easier
He invests deeply in people, not just in their work, but in their lives.
That trust becomes the foundation for navigating conflict, pressure, and tough decisions with empathy.
📚 Advice for emerging leaders
Rishi shared three powerful recommendations:
Be bold enough to try things before deciding you can’t.
Understand yourself — your values, your patterns.
Stay fluent in trends — business, cultural, and technological.
Curiosity and courage are non-negotiable.
🌟 Legacy is about people
Today, Rishi defines his leadership legacy simply:
That people who worked with him grew, personally and professionally, and carried those lessons into their own journeys.
Grateful for this conversation and for Rishi’s impact.
I’m excited to continue sharing stories of leaders who inspire us to lead with purpose and humanity.
